Well we have installed several EDFAs in our RF overlay network here in Islamabad. and these EDFAs are up and running for a number of years now, many of them have started giving problems in their lasers, output ports and other things like this. All of these cards are now out of warranty and we have to pay a handsome amount to get them repaired.
So we kept on thinking on the problems being faced and one major problem was that some output ports reduced output power from its nominal level. We got an idea that if some outputs are giving proper output and other are not, then most probably, the problem is in the pigtail or the connector of that specific port. So we took one Amplifier yesterday and opened it and checked its connector end face by a fiber scope. the connector was damaged.
So we decided to replace the pigtail and guess what, after replacement of the pigtail the problem got resolved. Now we will work on other cards having similar faults and see if we can make them working as well.
